Apparently Georgian embassy workers in Kiev don’t quite get the concept of a free press. When half-naked protestors, working as part of an international campaign backing the Georgian photo journalists recently arrested on espionage charges, tired to draw attention to that situation they were forcefully dispersed by an embassy employee. A local journalist is reported to have been injured during the dispersal.

According to FEMEN activists, the actions taken by the Georgian embassy only prove “the international community’s suspicions that official Tbilisi is media-phobic.”

“Members of the embassy demonstrated a lack of respect for all democratic values: freedom of speech, freedom of association. Thus we are even more worried about the journalists who were arrested in Georgia,” stated the FEMEN activists.

The Embassy has also issued a statement in which it expressed “regret at the incident” and apologized to those who were injured and to the Ukrainian public in general. They supposedly fired the employee responsible for the physical abuse of the protesters and journalists.

Four Georgian photographers, including a photographer with the presidential administration’s press service, Irakly Gedenidze, and his wife Natiya, were charged with espionage on July 9. Natiya Gedenidze was later released on bail. The other detainees are Zurab Kurtsikidze, a representative of the European Press Photo Agency (EPA), and Georgy Abdaladze, a photographer for the Foreign Ministry who was also working with the Associated Press.

This video is an unedited version of the incident. It contains brief nudity.

Lately I’ve found myself with some free time and not being one who enjoys sitting around I decided to try my luck with rounding up some commercial work. First I honed my script writing skills and planned ahead for how to shoot a commercial video. Doesn’t seem to hard if you’re already familiar with lighting, audio, and video. My plan is to hit the social media market and offer video as something that can be implemented with a web site rather than television. Video online is booming so might as well get off on the right foot and go where the money is, supposedly.

I targeted small businesses with a 20/30/60 second promo and placed an ad on Kijiji here in Halifax and in no time picked up my first client. Had a meeting to plan the shot, went over a script, they shared their needs, I shared my knowledge on what works and what doesn’t, and we were off to the races. I came over and did some shooting for a couple hours, spent an hour editing to the script, and bingo! WEBmmercial in the bag.

I’ll be giving this some serious time this summer between shooting my doc and working on other productions. The money is good, the hours are mine, and best of all this offers me some independence and I love that. I’ve own and operated a small business before and remember it’s not all fun and games. Making commercials is a completely different world than news or documentary shooting so my next step is to draw up a good contract and market, market, market.

I also found a great resource for commercial shooting over at the New York Video School. Lots of helpful information about the business of shooting for money.

Hope you’re having a great day!

Bita Haidarian Nossa, has an upcoming film about her “journey around the world to answer the big questions – who am I, where do I come from, and where can a girl find a good laser hair removalist?” If the trailer is any indication this will be on my watch list although I can’t find any information for a release date.

Bita was born in America to Baha’i refugee parents from Iran. Her story tells the “tragic-comic story of her family coming to America, her childhood in Texas, trying to fit in, and competitive cheerleading – all part of the quest of a girl who knows more about MTV than Al Jazeera.” The film looks gutsy and I like that.

And Bita’s plea to public – please watch my film! If it doesn’t succeed, I’m going to have to get married.

“If she can do something to change the world maybe I can, maybe you can, maybe whoever can. It doesn’t take an Ivy League education and lots of money, it’s like, standing up for what you believe in.” – Bita Haidarian
